Maria Malibran was very talented for musical composition, which was mainly practised as a leisure activity; she used to dedicate or donate compositions to her friends. According to Countess Merlin, Malibran’s aptitude for composing was not lower than her gift for drawing; “During rehearsal time – as Mrs. Merlin wrote – while carpenters were hammering, and singer’s voices and orchestra’s dingdong were echoing in her ears, I saw her busy noting with a pencil on music paper and sketching arias similarly to a first rate composer, without any effort or studying”.
