In
“Landscape” for double string ensemble (1992), the seven note
(0,1,2,4,7,8,9) chord corresponding to Messiaen’s “dominant chord”
develops canonically. The transposition grades upon which the chord is
placed always follow one after the other on the same 7 rising interval (corresponding
to perfect fifth) for one string ensemble, and on the same 7 descending
interval for the other ensemble. Horizontally, opposite fragments of
chromatic and hexatonal scales derive.
